Partner with UCSC

UCSC partners with faculty to create curricular and co-curricular opportunities for students to engage with the city through programs and events on and off campus. The Chicago Studies program officially launched in Autumn 2008 with the publication of the Chicago Studies Annual Journal. UCSC has been working to support faculty members in their efforts to connect the city of Chicago to their courses as well as created a website for students to learn how to study, engage, and discover the city on their own.

You can engage with Chicago Studies in several ways:

  • Chicago Course Connections:  Plan a field trip, bring a Chicago community leader as a speaker into your class, or work with UCSC to create an ongoing experiential learning project. Click here for information on small course grants. In addition to financial support, we can work to connect you to Chicago organizations and leaders relevant to your course. For more information, contact Chris Skrable.
  • Chicago Studies Course Listings: List your Chicago-focused course (or a future course) as a Chicago Studies course in the course catalog.  For more information, contact Chad Broughton.
  • Events and Programs: We plan programs and events for students both on and off campus during the academic year. If there are particular areas or topics that would be relevant to your course and which you might encourage your students to attend, please contact us. If you have specific ideas for speakers, service projects, neighborhoods, or organizations to explore (either this quarter or in the future), please share these as well.
  • Chicago Studies Journal:  The College publishes a collection of the best undergraduate writing across disciplines focused on or related to Chicago. If you have a student whose work deserves consideration, please contact Martha Merritt.

As the Chicago Studies Program continues to grow, we are very excited to partner with faculty of the College as you engage students in the city. We look forward to hearing from you soon and working with you in the future.

Since 2002, UCSC has presented the Faculty Service Award recognizing the extraordinary commitment of faculty in either direct service or in the support of students engaged in civic-minded scholarship. Selection criteria include strong recommendations from students across campus.
